National Volunteer Week

As we know volunteers are a crucial component of running a successful Agricultural Show and we cannot thank them enough for their dedication and commitment. The National Volunteer Week theme this year is to Recognise, Reconnect & Reimagine.

RECOGNISE - Celebrate & thank volunteers for the vital role they play in our lives

RECONNECT - To what is important by giving our time to help others and ourselves

REIMAGINE - How we better support volunteers and communities they help

As we prepare for the 2021 Show Season if you would like to give some time to your local Agricultural Show Society, please do not hesitate to get in touch with them as societies are always looking for new volunteers and fresh ideas. For the longevity of Agricultural Shows it relies on volunteers to keep them running for many more years!

Successful Applicants of Supporting Our Agricultural & Pastoral Societies Infrastructure State Government Grants

Wednesday 28 April 2021

The Andrews Labor Government is backing better facilities at Victoria’s Agricultural and Pastoral Societies as they reopen their doors to crowds in 2021.

Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas today announced almost $300,000 in funding for 46 projects that will enable show societies across the state to undertake projects that will benefit their communities.

Grants of up to $10,000 will help societies upgrade or establish new facilities, increase local involvement in show activities and create opportunities for agricultural businesses. The support comes after societies experienced a tough year in 2020 with shows cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Examples of projects funded include equipment such as sanitiser stations, animal yards, fencing, shade covers and lighting or upgrades to shearing pavilions, luncheon halls, public amenities and viewing stands.

The projects will help the societies deliver exciting events that provide a direct benefit to agricultural communities, building confidence in the sector and supporting regional economies and jobs.

Agricultural and Pastoral Societies play an integral role in many regional communities in Victoria, organising much-loved shows each year and hosting other events for their communities.

The new funding program aligns with the Labor Government’s Agriculture Strategy by supporting Victoria’s Agricultural and Pastoral Societies to promote the industry’s commitment to quality and high performance.

Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas quoted:

“I look forward to heading along to some of the great shows our Agricultural and Pastoral Societies will be putting on this year as they bring our regional communities together and promote Victorian agriculture.”

“Agricultural and Pastoral Societies play a crucial role for many regional communities, hosting events ranging from the annual shows to markets, dances, touring entertainment and more.”

“These grants will provide an opportunity for many Victorian Agricultural and Pastoral Societies to improve their facilities, which will benefit the whole community.”

Racing Victoria Off The Track Equine Business Grants

New Business Grant Boosts Support for Retired Racehorses

Racing Victoria (RV) has today announced new support for Victorian businesses, including horse/trail riding services, equine colleges, equine therapy centres and pony clubs, to bolster the opportunities afforded horses’ that have retired from the Victorian racing industry.

A new $10,000 business grant for Victorian equine-related businesses will help boost their operations, with the sole objective of growing the number of off-the-track thoroughbreds being utilised by these organisations.

The Off The Track Business Grant Program is expected to help stimulate businesses to accommodate more horses, including those currently operating with thoroughbreds or looking to take them on for the first time.

The program contains four key initiatives, including increasing the number of retired thoroughbreds an equine business can utilise; increasing the breadth of career options for non-competitive thoroughbreds; providing longevity to thoroughbreds in their post-racing career; and encouraging an equine business (which may currently utilise other breeds) to incorporate thoroughbreds into their operation on a sustainable basis.

Both for-profit and not-for-profit businesses are eligible to apply for the grant, and must submit their application before 5pm (AEST) on April 9, 2021 via the programs SmartyGrants page.

Building on the positive progress of RV’s current post-racing initiatives, this program recognises the importance of growing the demand for thoroughbreds beyond the equestrian community to maximise the opportunities afforded every retired racehorse.

This grant becomes even more important in the current climate, where the COVID-19 pandemic continues to suppress economic activity, and may do for a considerable period into the future.

The Off The Track Business Grant Program will complement the various post-racing initiatives RV has introduced over the past 12 months, including the RESET Program, Retrainer Capacity Expansion Grant Program, COVID-19 relief support scheme for RV Acknowledged Retrainers, and partnerships with organisations such as Riding for the Disabled Association of Victoria to help improve the post-racing wellbeing of racehorses in Victoria.

Quotes attributed to RV General Manager, Equine Welfare, Jennifer Hughes:

“I’m really excited to see the Off The Track Business Grant Program open to Victorian businesses.

“It’s another important step to help expand our post-racing options available to retired racehorses.

“We know that like any horse, not all former gallopers are suited to the equestrian world, so this opens the door for more thoroughbreds to explore non-competitive options post-racing.

“The program also provides us the opportunity to work with operators we traditionally haven’t considered as a pathway for off-the-track horses and further demonstrate the versatility of thoroughbreds.

“We hope to support and incentivise those businesses that are either looking to increase the number of thoroughbreds they currently have or for those considering the breed for the first time.

“Ultimately, our aim is to see this program drive long-term demand for thoroughbreds post-racing and support the growth of equine businesses operating in Victoria.”
